Our take
Yes - you could just use standard hardware store duct tape. However, we find duct tape to leave significant amounts of residue when used, and difficult to tear by hand due to the threads used throughout. We love the bright colors available from Yamato - use it to mark objects within your pack (making them easier to find), wrap around the top end of a trekking pole for easy cary and making your poles easier to locate in the dark, or add some bright identification to your luggage when travelling.
